Vanguard Integrated Stereo Amplifier  The Vanguard incorporates a 200-watt-per channel amplifier and a Class A preamplifier, enclosed in a chassis that borrows its design and construction from the new Krell Foundation preamp/processor, Connect stream player, Illusion preamp and iBias amplifiers. An optional, field-installable digital module with USB, HDMI, coaxial, and optical inputs as well as Ethernet audio and apt-X Bluetooth streaming will also be available.  The Vanguards amplifier incorporates a massive power supply with a 750 VA toroidal transformer and 80,000 microfarads of storage capacitance. The tremendous amount of energy on tap provides 200 watts per channel into 8 ohms and 400 watts into 4 ohms. Two quiet, thermostatically controlled fans permit the use of a surprisingly compact chassis.  The preamplifier section of the Vanguard borrows its balanced, fully discrete Class A circuit concepts from Krells top-of-the-line Illusion preamplifiers. Krells Current Mode technology is employed to assure unequaled signal bandwidth, easily enough to handle the latest high-resolution PCM and DSD audio sources without impacting high-frequency response and detail.  Packed with many of Krells most musical-sounding technologies, the elegant chassis is living-room-friendly. Yet it has enough power to achieve incredible, lifelike dynamics with any speaker.  The front-panel menu system provides configuration features such as input naming and input trim. Theater Throughput mode lets the Vanguard serve as the core of a surround-sound system without sacrificing two-channel sound quality. Analog Inputs include three stereo RCA and one stereo balanced XLR. High-quality WBT speaker cable terminals provide a secure, electrically ideal connection.  The Vanguard also offers features that make it perfect for custom installation, such as 3.5mm jacks for IR input and 12-volt trigger input and output, as well as optional rack-mount ears. Illusion Preamplifier The Illusion preamplifier extends the Krell tradition of separating the power supply from the audio circuitry in our flagship preamplifiers. Sharing the new Class A iBias power amplifier aesthetic and featuring Krell CAST technology, the Illusion preamplifier is the ideal match for the new Solo 375 and Solo 575 power amplifiers. The optional crossover functionality offers the ability to use a subwoofer/satellite speaker arrangement and still maintain the highest quality sonic performance. Previous to the Illusion preamplifier, this system configuration would require signals to pass through a subwoofers lower quality crossover circuitry. The Illusion preamplifier is the centerpiece of a world class audio system where space is at a premium Crossover Highlights Owing to Krells work in the Modulari Duo Reference loudspeaker, the unique crossover feature is a highly sophisticated option. When the optional board is present, additional crossover menu items become available. Definable parameters include independently assignable crossover frequencies and filter types for the high and low pass sections. Choices include 40Hz, 55Hz, 75Hz, and 100Hz crossover points with 12dB, 24dB, and 48dB Butterworth or 24dB Linkwitz-Riley style filters. A complete Krell system (source, preamp, and amplifier) system, connected using CAST interconnects reduces the number of voltage gain stages to the minimum, one. The resulting noise floor approaches the theoretical limit of technology. Negative feedback is not used anywhere in the preamp, nor is it necessary. Open-loop distortion is typically less than 0.003%. The volume control is realized with a balanced resistor ladder bandwidth and transient response of the preamp circuitry are virtually unaffected by the volume setting. Power Supply Highlights The Illusion audio circuits receive power from a Krell Current Mode analog power supply housed in its own dedicated chassis. Krell Cipher SACD/CD Player Featuring an advanced disc drive and coupled to the latest Krell digital and analog output circuitry, the Krell Cipher delivers the ultimate performance from today's highest resolution source material. Every performance enhancement is incorporated to retrieve the most accurate signal from SACD and CD music titles. Isolated mechanically from the underlying chassis, the drive mechanism utilizes composite mounts to minimize vibration induced errors. Special sound dampening material is strategically placed inside the unit to minimize mechanical resonances even further. Krell customized disc drive firmware enhances reading accuracy, drive mechanics, and operational parameter. As an ultimate final step, the separate SACD and CD laser heads are individually calibrated by hand for the precise output levels required for reference quality SACD and CD playback.  All signals are fed into a custom designed Krell anti-jitter module that reduces jitter to a virtually immeasurable level. From there, signals are fed to a 24 bit/192 KHz digital filter and then to a pair of balanced 24-bit/192 kHz digital-to analog converters (DACs). Conventional players use one DAC for both channels and convert the current output of the DACs to voltage, a process that invariably causes signal distortion. Instead, the Cipher uses one DAC per channel and feeds the native balanced current output directly to Krell Current Mode circuitry. Removing the typical current-to-voltage stage found in conventional players eliminates distortions associated with this conversion. Balanced DACs maintain a dual differential balanced signal from the output of the DACs to the output connections. This lowers distortion and improves signal to noise ratio to their maximum levels. Core Krell technologies of discrete, complementary, direct coupled circuitry are employed throughout the surface mount based output stage. Evolution CAST and balanced connections are included for optimal stereo playback. A complete Evolution (source, preamp, amplifier) system, connected in CAST, reduces the number of voltage gain stages to the minimum: one. Foundation Surround Processor Foundation, is the latest in a long line of state-of-the-art A/V processors from Krell. Featuring the latest digital connectivity, the Foundation also maintains Krell's exacting standards for analog audio reproduction. From decoding the latest lossless audio formats, extensive digital switching, 3DTV pass-through, and more, the Foundation is fully compliant with the digital age. Yet the 7.1-channel processor also features balanced audio outputs, automatic setup and room EQ, and Krell's legendary robust hardware. A slim new form factor exudes the Krell aesthetic, while allowing placement in smaller equipment racks. In addition to 10 HDMI 1.4a inputs, the Foundation has 2 HDMI outputs, both of which feature Audio Return Channel. With ARC, a display device is able to send audio back down the HDMI cable to the processor. This is beneficial for those with televisions with built-in web streaming capability like Netflix or Pandora, so the streaming audio can use the full home theater system instead of just the TV's speakers. The Foundation passes video signals directly without any video processing, ensuring bit-for-bit accuracy of the signal, up to 1080p/60.
